Brian Holguin and Liam McCormack-Sharp (illustrator) teamed up in a monthly series spin-off called "Spawn the Dark Ages". The story centred around Lord Iain Covenant in AD901, a knight killed in a holy crusade far from his homeland and who returns as a Hellspawn. The series lasted until October 2001 with issue #28.
This is one of my favourite character and I wished more figures were made of him. As the following images can attest, he seems to have a constant change of costumes, even the mask comes in various shapes and sizes.
A beautiful illustration of him in the very first issue
and the horse that he rode on. Compared this to the collectible figure released as part of Series 24 known as "Spawn the Dark Ages i.23", the horse shouldn't be brown.
In issue #3, there is a definite hot blue pants as he conversed with a Cogliostro who would go on a crash diet as the story develops.
Same issue #3, a closeup look.
By issue #9, he seems to have a new costume - the mask is more enveloping and there are fur around his cape.
And in issue #10, a Mageneto inspired mask.
Angel Medina is the guest illustrator for issue #12 while Liam Mccormark-Sharp continued until issue #14.
This cover of issue #15 by Simon Davis should be the standard for all Spawn the Black Knight which don't seems to come with a cape. The illustration duties meanwhile have been handed over to Nat Jones and he promptly came out with a really terrific Spawn below
One of the absolute best, I want this to be a collectible figure!
In issue #17, he went into a summer dressing mode
In issue #21, he re-emerged with a new helmet. The knee guard is now spiky and the spawn logo is gone.
I don't recall him using bow and arrows in this series but this is a very good illustrator for those who wants to turn into a sculpture...but lose the handbag please.
I do not want to place too much details and large images in spawncomics blog as it is meant to be a listing, thus the addendum.
